USA - Key Largo - Volunteer science divers with the National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS) are helping Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary unlock the mystery of an early 20th century shipwreck off Key Largo, Fla. Underwater surveys and research conducted this week will build upon past studies and bring maritime archaeologists a step closer to naming the wreckage. The shallow coral reefs of the Florida Keys have claimed countless ships over the centuries, and contributed to a once-thriving salvaging industry. The mystery wreck rests amid the reef known as “The Elbow” and is joined in close proximity by two known shipwrecks – the USS Arkansas and City of Washington. The remains of a steel-hulled ship rest in 25-feet of water, six miles off Key Largo and have been locally dubbed as “Mike’s Wreck,” named such after the employee of a local dive operator. Maritime archaeologists think the mystery shipwreck could be the Hannah M. Bell, a British steamship that grounded on the reef in April 1911, but need to conduct additional surveys and research.“Confirming the exact ship does more than give the site a name, it provides a history and context with which divers can gain greater appreciation for our shared maritime heritage,” said Brenda Altmeier, sanctuary maritime heritage coordinator.

ROYAUME UNI – Kingswood - Building work has begun on a controversial development in Kingswood despite the first phase of an archaeological dig finding evidence of a Roman settlement on the site. Charles Parry, senior archaeological officer at Gloucestershire County Council, said the finds were not of historical importance. He said: "As predicted, there is some Roman occupation this site, dating to the later Roman period. The problem is that the archaeological remains are very poorly maintained. ”Mr Parry explained that the boundaries, cobble stones and archaeological finds including pottery and animal bones do not amount to articles of great historical importance as the ground had been subject to intensive ploughing in the mediaeval times and later, leaving a truncated, damaged site. The archaeologists, AC Archaeology, will continue their analysis of the area.

EGYPTE – Saqqara - Egypt on Thursday reopened the Serapeum of Saqqara, a vast underground necropolis south of Cairo dedicated to the bulls of Apis, after 11 years and complete renovation of the historic pharaonic site. The Serapeum, whose origin dates back to around 1400 BC, was discovered in 1851 by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, founder of the first department of Egyptian antiquities. It was closed temporarily in 2001 because of water seepage and earth movements. The site contains huge subterranean galleries in which are contained the large tombs of some 30 sacred bulls, accompanied by steles bearing inscriptions providing information on the reigns under which the animals lived.
